Drought and flood hazards management for agricultural water users in Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract Central Java has a huge population and is the food production area for Indonesia. Due to its geographical complexity human factor, it very vulnerable drought flood hazards. This study aimed analyse events in their impact on economic, environmental, social aspects, as well evaluate multi-hazard management related agriculture. Drought monitoring were conducted by SPI SPEI. Those hazard forecasting done correlating selected index MEI. The vulnerability of five municipalities was evaluated DVI. Proposed mitigation strategies offered after evaluating results current disaster management. showed that SPEI-3 best method determine dry wet periods during 1980-2010, correlation MEI relatively higher than other indices (R 2 =0.3612). Karanganyar least region (DVI=0.36) Rembang highest DVI (0.59). Since numerous stakeholders are responsible managing water availability different sectors, then proposed improvements agricultural focused government, farmers, public supplier, coastal residents particular measures.
